What are the different levels of car insurance cover?

We find that many people become confused when trying to compare cheap car insurance near me. Before you attempt to sift through the large number of insurance companies trying to offer you the best deal, it’s important to know the difference between each level of cover. Here, we tell you everything you need to know:

The three variations of car insurance are:

• Fully comprehensive insurance
• Third party fire and theft insurance
• Third party insurance

Third party insurance

This is the minimum level of insurance that is legally required to drive in the UAE. However, you should be aware that if you are only choosing to invest in third party insurance, your cover will be the most basic. This type of insurance only covers damage that you may cause to someone’s property, or compensation for any injuries. Therefore, everyone is covered other than you. If your vehicle has sustained damage from an accident, you won’t be covered. This also applies to issues that aren’t self-caused, such as your vehicle being stolen or damaged by a fire.

As you’d expect, third party insurance used to cost less than other options. However, they are now often the most expensive. While we may recommend this to those owning an older, less valuable car, it is often more cost-effective to look for other insurance, and this will also reduce your level of risk.

Third party fire and theft insurance

This offers an extra layer of protection than third party only, as you’ll also be protected if your car is stolen or damaged by fire. Again, this tends to be more expensive than fully comprehensive insurance, and is more suited to older cars. If you have a new, top of the range vehicle, you don’t want to risk not being covered for accidental damage, which is much more common than theft or fire.

Fully comprehensive

This is the greatest level of insurance cover. With fully comprehensive insurance, you’ll be covered for any damage to other vehicles, and your own. You’ll also be covered for thefts, fires and accidents. Historically, this was the most expensive, but nowadays, full comprehensive insurance tends to offer the cheapest quotes. However, you should be aware that your insurance quote will vary depending on a number of other factors, and it’s always a good idea to explore your options before deciding to commit to one.
