Varying levels on maternity care in your health insurance plan

Maternity care

If you are a resident of Dubai or an expat working in the city, you need to ensure that you have health insurance to cover you should you require medical care. When it comes to maternity care, there are varying levels of health insurance cover and it is important to consider your basic needs if you are planning to fall pregnant. Another aspect to consider it that many health insurance plans have waiting periods ranging from 6 to 12 months for which you must contribute to your health insurance plan before being able to claim or utilize the benefits. Family planning is therefore very important.

Dubai is known for having very high-quality private healthcare and hospital facilities. Having appropriate healthcare cover will ensure that you are able to receive this level of care and you are your baby in a private hospital. Important to note: if you are already pregnant or planning on having your baby in Dubai, you must be married and have proof of your marriage. If you are already pregnant and unmarried, you will be required to return to your home country to deliver your baby.

Prenatal requirements

When you first fall pregnant, you will need to see an ob-gyn (which stands for obstetrician-gynecologist), who is a specialized doctor who focuses on maternity care and the delivery of your baby. Most healthcare facilities in Dubai offer prenatal packages which include up to 12 prenatal appointments and a routine birth plan, however the costs vary according to whether you choose a public or private hospital and whether you require any additional tests or medication during your pregnancy. Prenatal consultations also include ultrasound scans to make sure your baby is developing and growing as he or she should be.

Childbirth and hospital stay

In Dubai, you are required to make sure that your insurance covers AED 7000 for normal delivery and AED 10,000 for a medically necessary caesarian section. Most health care plans require the insured individual to cover a co-payment of up to 10% of the delivery costs. If you have complications during your pregnancy and birthing process, you may incur further costs.

Postnatal care

Postnatal healthcare includes all consultations with your specialist ob-gyn and pediatrician after your baby is born. It also includes routine vaccinations, growth check ins and nutrition consultations your baby requires.

Considering a plan that covers all three phases of your maternity process is beneficial to ensuring that you and your bundle of joy receive the best care and your baby gets a great start to life!
